Ragn-Sells AS applied for support from the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) under the measure “Waste Recovery, Recycling and Digital Reporting” to introduce an innovative drum composter at the Väätsa Landfill. The solution helps make biowaste treatment more efficient at a time when the volume of separately collected kitchen and catering waste has increased significantly in recent years. The new technology enables faster and more environmentally sustainable processing, offering better control over the composting process and reducing environmental impact.
The new technology enables biowaste to be handled faster, cleaner and with better process control. The drum composter provides a stable and precisely regulated environment where temperature, humidity and airflow can be continuously monitored and adjusted. This ensures a more consistent decomposition process and makes it possible to produce high-quality compost suitable for use in both agriculture and landscaping, helping to maintain a reliable supply chain of nutrient-rich and safe soil improvers.
The project was prepared with the support of the Haap Consulting team. The growth in separate collection of biowaste has created a clear need for modern and efficient treatment solutions capable of handling high-organic-content materials in a controlled and reliable manner – exactly what the new drum composter enables.
As a result of the cooperation, Ragn-Sells received nearly 0.5 million euros in funding from the KIK measure for the acquisition of the new technology. The composting solution helps reduce methane emissions that would otherwise be released if biowaste were landfilled and returns valuable nutrients back into circulation. This improves the overall quality of waste management and reduces the carbon footprint, supporting the achievement of Estonia’s broader circular economy and climate goals.
